Why Traveling Will Make You See the World Differently
Traveling has been a popular activity for thousands of years. It broadens your horizon by confronting you with people, things, places and cultures you have never seen before.
For some, it is a great way to gain some distance to their every day lives. For others, it is an opportunity to learn new things and to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.
– Andre Gide
The farther away from home you go, the more different your environment will feel. While the foreignness may scare you at first and even hold you back from going to where you actually would like to go, it is most likely worthwhile anyways. Doing unfamiliar things always has the benefit of teaching you who you really are and what you actually like or not.
Getting to know yourself better is one of the things that will happen while you travel. By self-observing how you react on new experiences, you will find out what captivates your mind, and therefore you will discover yourself.
The effect can be strengthened by something that most people never dare doing: traveling alone. Not relying on others and creating plans together forces more responsibility onto yourself, but also allows you to be more flexible and free in your decisions.
The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.
– Henry David Thoreau
I have to admit that, even if moving to a foreign city alone was a very enhancing experience for me, I never really went on a long trip far away and completely alone. However, talking to people who spent days or weeks alone somewhere in a foreign land totally convinced me to give it a try soon.
After traveling you will come back as a different person. You will change your way of thinking. Maybe you viewed your world only from one perspective before leaving home. Each time you come back, you add a perspective and you get a clearer view of everything around you.
My last vacation, which I spent in Lloret de Mar in Spain, taught me a lot. The place is a popular partying location, especially for young people from all over Europe, and before I went there, my expectation was mainly to do some partying.
But what I discovered was much more than that. I found out that it is not just a place to party. Exploring the spots that the majority of travelers never explores showed me that beauty can be found everywhere, and I got to know amazing people that I never would have expected to meet there.
The vacation taught me a new way of thinking and it is in fact an indirect trigger for me to start this blog, and therefore I chose to write about this topic in this first blog post.
I am sure that the surprise effect also holds for everywhere else you may go. What you expect isn’t what you get. Traveling will always offer you more…
Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.
